Bridgeport police say the fire happened at 3:30 a.m. on the second floor of the building on Stratford Avenue.
They say the building had both commercial businesses and apartments.
The American Red Cross is assisting those residents who can't return to their homes.
It was not immediately clear how many people were displaced or what sparked the fire.
