NORWALK - United Illuminating (UI) has announced a new plan to prevent flooding in response to substation damage and power outages caused by Sandy and Irene.

UI today introduced an $11 million project that will protect six substations in Bridgeport and New Haven from floodwaters. The improvements include new flood walls called Hesco barriers that are used to keep water at bay in Afghanistan and Mississippi.

Officials also say they are installing pumps, water level sensors and cameras, in addition to sealing substation buildings and conduits.

UI says it is also looking into long-term solutions for flooding such as raising its substations.
