Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Thursday that he signed a bill into law aimed at limiting and reducing the amount of trash that transfer stations in certain areas can take in.
The mayor signed the bill in Williamsburg, which is an area that will benefit from the law. The law will also prevent new dumpsters from opening in some of the areas like the South Bronx and Greenpoint.
Instead of trash being directed to those areas, it will be transferred to other areas that can handle the additional garbage.
"We no longer accept the notion that if you happen to be poor or you happen to have darker skin that all the garbage goes to your neighborhood," says de Blasio. "Those days have ended."
The law's proponents say it could help pollution and improve the quality of life in the Brooklyn neighborhoods affected by a garbage problem.
