Milford officials have launched a plan they say will rid city streets of panhandlers.
Organizers of the "Have A Heart, Give Smart" campaign say the goal is to help panhandlers get back on their feet. They want to encourage people to keep giving, but only directly to organizations that can help those in need.
United Way of Milford is one of many organizations teaming up with the mayor's office to help combat what some say is a growing problem. Residents in the area told News 12 that they agree with the initiative.
Cards that list the agencies involved in the campaign are going to be passed out to panhandlers in the city. Officials say it is their experience that those truly in need will seek out resources once they know where to go.
