Mourners remember beloved NYPD officer
Police officers remembered a Bronx resident who was one of the NYPD's finest Saturday.
Mourners filled St. Margaret of Cortona Church to remember William Hoppmann, who served 20 years on the force.
Hoppmann turned 100 years old in January and celebrated his birthday at the 50th Precinct, where he worked for part of his career.
His daughters say they are burying their father at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne because their mother was buried there more than 40 years ago.
"The police force was his pride and joy until he met my mother and then they slipped down to second," Barbara Hoppmann says. "She was everything to him."
His daughters say Hoppmann was injured trying to break up a fight while he was off-duty years ago, leading to his retirement.
