STAMFORD - Sen. Chris Murphy and Rep. Jim Himes pressed for universal gun safety today, saying strategies to curb gun violence on the streets should be just as effective as preventing it on school grounds.

The legislative duo met with police and mental health advocates today to discuss illegal gun ownership. Murphy says new gun control policies must include background checks and a gun registry, and that simple handguns cannot be ignored at the expense of high-magazine assault weapons.

Himes says passing gun legislation will be a difficult slog through the Republican-controlled House, although he claims background checks appear to have the widest public support.
