A transformer fire at a senior citizen apartment building in Newark caused power outages and left 87 residents displaced Saturday night, according to officials.

Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda says firefighters responded to 920 Franklin Ave. around 5 p.m. and evacuated residents. The fire was under control by 6:24 p.m.

Two adults were evaluated at the scene by EMS and another adult was hospitalized.

PSE&G arrived and began working on repairs shortly after. As of Sunday morning, power has been restored from Heller Parkway to Bloomfield Avenue and from North 6th Street to North 8th Street.

“Power at 920 Franklin Ave. and two adjacent senior citizens’ buildings has not yet been restored, resulting in 69 families requiring temporary relocation,” said Miranda.

Eight people accepted shelter from the American Red Cross, as most residents chose to not be relocated and made private arrangements.
