BRIDGEPORT - Police say one man is dead after two fishermen were swept onto a sandbar by the stormy tide Tuesday.

Police believe the two men fishing were unaware of the storm and were trying to return to shore by crossing a rocky area of Seaside Park. Three workers from the Water Pollution Control Authority jumped into the water to help the fishermen, but were taken under by the tide.

Emergency responders saved four of the victims, but a fifth man was eventually found unresponsive in the water. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
