12-year-old thwarts would-be robber

FAIRFIELD - Fairfield police are crediting a 12-year-old girl with foiling a would-be robber in her home.

Police say the girl was home sick from school when Edward Gladwell, 40, of West Haven, broke into the home on South Benson Road.

The girl says she heard Gladwell speaking on the phone and managed to sneak past him. Once outside of the home, she had a neighbor call police.

Police say they found jewelry and cash on Gladwell when he was arrested. Since he has been in custody, police say he has admitted he was stealing to support his drug habit.

Officials say the young girl is shaken up, but was back in school today.
