BRIDGEPORT - Fire officials say 18 people were forced from their Bridgeport apartments Sunday after a fast-moving fire gutted their homes.

The flames broke out at around 2 a.m. and quickly spread from one multifamily home to other apartment buildings. Witnesses say the powerful flames were visible from at least a half mile away.

Officials say the blaze persisted for more than an hour and injured one firefighter.

The 18 people left homeless by the fire weren't injured and are staying at a Bridgeport hotel through the American Red Cross.
