2 men break into Fairfield home, attack elderly couple

FAIRFIELD - Police are hunting for two suspects behind the violent burglary of an elderly couple in Fairfield.

One of the victims says the attack took place after two men entered the home's garage. The male victim says he tried to fend off the intruders with his cane, but was punched in the face.

The second intruder then grabbed the woman's purse, bruising her in the process.

Police say the incident should serve as a reminder to residents of the need to stay alert, even in their own garage.

"Folks, you have to realize that there is no safe zone until you're actually in your home," says Sgt. James Perez, of the Fairfield Police Department.

The victims say police recovered a cigarette with a footprint in their driveway. They hope that evidence helps lead to an arrest.
