Police say the first incident happened at around 10:30 a.m. when four children on kayaks and a paddleboard had to be rescued.

“They were out in ankle deep water, and then within minutes, they got swept out into water over their heads,” said Officer James Wiltsie, of the Fairfield Police Marine Unit.

Officer Wiltsie told News 12 the children were transported to the hospital to check for hypothermia.

A second rescue occurred about 30 minutes later after a father and two children were saved from an overturned sailboat.
