STAMFORD - Five New York fishermen are safe this evening after being plucked from the Long Island Sound after their boat sank yesterday between Stamford and Long Island.

Authorities say only two of the men were wearing life preservers. Officials say adults can legally boat without a life jacket, as long as they are accessible onboard.

Boating experts in southwestern Connecticut say winds and waves can take advantage of sailors and advise wearing a life preserver whenever out on open water.

Winds hit 28 knots when the boat capsized yesterday, according to local boaters.
