The state Department of Public Health says an outbreak of the mumps virus has hit Sacred Heart University.

Officials say eight cases have been confirmed at the university. They believe at least nine others are suspected.

Sacred Heart has been emailing students weekly updates since the first three cases -- all friends who got it on the same day -- were reported just over a month ago.

Mumps involves swelling of the jaw, fever and headaches. Students who get it are forced to self-isolate for five days.

At Harvard University, more than 40 students have contracted mumps this spring.

Health experts say the illness usually resolves itself in a few weeks, but can lead to dangerous complications in adults.

All college students in Connecticut are required to have a mumps vaccination, so health officials say most of the cases have been minor.
