FAIRFIELD - As the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks nears, a former Secret Service agent from Fairfield recalls how that day inspired him to serve his country.

Lt. Col. Thomas Armas says he was working next door to the World Trade Center (WTC) on Sept. 11.

Armas says he immediately ran into the WTC to help people escape the smoke and flames. Armed with a flashlight he says he got as many people out of the building as he could.

The former agent says that seeing the destruction is what led him to join the Marines. Three years later, Armas was deployed to Iraq.

After serving two tours in Iraq, Armas says he would do it all over again in a heartbeat. Armas was also awarded the Presidential Medal of Valor.
