STRATFORD - Firefighters raced to the scene yesterday of a fire at the dilapidated cottages on Long Beach Peninsula in Stratford.

Officials say the fire started just before 4 p.m. on Oak Bluff Avenue.

According to investigators, no one was hurt. They have not yet said what caused the fire.

Stratford Mayor John Harkins says it could have been prevented if the Department of Environmental Protection followed his orders to finish work on the cottages that started in March.

The DEP responded by saying it has worked with town, state and federal governments to make the area safe and usable for the future.

Authorities say it is the sixth abandoned cottage to burn down.
