STRATFORD - A motorist is recovering from an accident caused by his brakes giving way Tuesday afternoon in Stratford.

Aboul Yassin says he was driving down Knowlton Street when his brakes went out. He was forced to dodge oncoming traffic and tried to crash into a utility pole to come to a full stop. He eventually crashed into the side of a house, which caused a gas pipe on that resident's property to rupture.

Police and fire crews responded to the scene, as did electrical crews to fix a downed pole.

Yassin says the ordeal marked the first time his car had ever failed him in such a dangerous way. "I tried to avoid by any means any accident," he says.
