Alleged chair attacker appears in court

STAMFORD - A Stamford man who police say hit his girlfriend with a chair appeared in court today.

Jorge Duarte, 26, was arrested early Sunday morning after allegedly hitting his girlfriend over the head with a chair. Police say he was upset she was dancing with another man at a local club.

A judge toughened a previously issued protective order by family services and ordered Duarte not to have any contact with the victim, including phone calls, e-mails and text messages.

Police say the victim was taken to Stamford Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and was released.

Duarte is being held on $50,000 bond.
