DARIEN - A Darien-based animal protection group says it has lost a five-year court battle to stop United Illuminating from killing monk parakeets nesting on utility poles.

A United Illuminating spokesperson says while the ruling means the company can capture the birds and turn them over to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, it has no plans to do so.

Priscilla Feral, the president of the animal rights organization Friends of Animals, says she will now try to persuade the state?s Legislature to add monk parakeets to the protected bird act.

Feral says while her organization lost the lawsuit, she's glad the pressure caused United Illuminating to change its tactics.
