BRIDGEPORT - Some Bridgeport students attended the first White House Talent Show in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday.

The five Roosevelt School students that attended the talent show are part of a pilot program to use art education to help turn around struggling schools. Though they weren't on stage, their artwork was showcased inside 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

In 2011, the school was one of eight in the country picked to receive a grant to help the low-performing school with art through the Turnaround Arts initiative.

Since its inception, statistics show that Roosevelt School attendance has gone up and in-school suspension has gone down. Math and reading scores are also on the rise.

Michelle Obama also announced today that the program will be expanding to 35 schools in 11 states this fall.
