WESTPORT - The Westport Astronomical Society invited people out to see a special event today.

Mercury crossed the sun and you could only see it, officials say, with a telescope using a special filter.

The society opened the Rolnick Observatory on Bayberry Lane so people could look through the telescope and see it.

The observatory says the event only happens about 13 times a century.

It started this morning just after 7 a.m., and officials say the whole event lasted about 7 1/2 hours.

The Westport Astronomical Society will remain open to the public every Wednesday night, offering people a chance to look at the stars.
