Autopsy shows firefighter died from smoke inhalation

BRIDGPORT - An autopsy performed on a Bridgeport firefighter who died over the weekend after battling a fire shows he died of smoke inhalation.

The autopsy on 49-year-old Michel Baik also showed he suffered from coronary artery disease, which contributed to his death. Baik and Lt. Steven Velasquez, 40, were killed Saturday while battling a three-alarm blaze at an Elmwood Avenue home.

Investigators say the equipment the men were using was brought to a state lab to determine if there were any problems.  The department says it tests equipment on a daily basis, at the start of each shift.

The state medical examiner says more information is needed to determine how Velasquez died.

Tentative funeral arrangements for Baik have been set for Friday at St. Nicholas Church in Bridgeport.
