Aviation pioneer honored in Bridgeport

BRIDGEPORT - Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch today honored an aviation pioneer who was born in Germany and immigrated to Bridgeport.

"We're today joining with you to make sure that Gustav Weisskopf is given the credit he deserves," said Finch, who spoke with the mayor of Leutershausen, Germany via Skype from the Discovery Museum in Bridgeport.

Weisskopf, who became known in the United States as Gustave Whitehead, is believed by many to have piloted a plane two years before the Wright brothers first took off.
