MILFORD - For competitive bird watchers in Connecticut, Sunday is what's called "the Big Day."

It marks the biggest birding competition of the year. Teams race to identify as many bird species as possible in 24 hours.

The Raven Luna-Ticks, one of the top teams in Connecticut, currently holds the state record for most birds identified in a Big Day.

"We started at midnight at Station 43 in South Windsor for nocturnal birds like owls, rails and bitterns," says Luna-Ticks member Dave Provencher.

Team members estimated that almost 100 stops could be made by the time the event ends.

They say they use the competition not only as source of pride but as a major fundraiser for the Coastal Center at Milford Point. The money raised goes toward events, programming and conservation efforts.
