WESTPORT - Westport police and town officials are warning residents about reports of black bear sightings in the area.

There have been three confirmed sightings of the bear, with locations on Weston Road, Tupelo Road and Wilton Road.

Officials do not believe the bear is aggressive, but if spotted, caution should be taken and the animal should be avoided.

In the area, Redding tops the list of bears sighted in the last year with seven, while Stamford trails closely with five. The animals are an elusive rarity in Westport, with zero reported sightings last year.

The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection has a page where people can report bear sightings.
