BRIDGEPORT - Bridgeport's animal shelter is pleading with the public to help save the lives of several cats who may be put down if they do not get homes.

There are about 40 cats in the shelter right now, which is about twice as much as the establishment's capacity.

Chief Animal Control Officer Jimmy Gonzalez says fewer people are adopting, but just as many are bringing cats in to the shelter. He says the amount coming in is triple the amount being adopted.

Animal control says the charitable organization T.A.I.L.S. in Westport will be covering the adoption fee for the cats.

The shelter says it may have to start euthanizing some of the cats there if it can't find homes for them soon.
