NORWALK - The Bridgeport Board of Education is considering cutting the city's remaining school resource officers in an effort to tighten the budget.

Superintendent Fran Rabinowitz, who opposes the idea, says it came from the board's finance committee. She says the officers are helping keep children safe, and that they are responsible for reducing the number of school arrests by 75 percent.

The board says cutting the officers could save almost $500,000 a year. There were at one time 14 resource officers in the city, but cuts whittled that number down to five.

Former school resource officer Steve Nelson says the five certified officers employed by the board are already responsible for 22,000 city kids.

The eight-member board is expected to vote on the issue Monday night.
