BRIDGEPORT - Bridgeport renamed an intersection in honor of Pope John Paul II, who was canonized along with Pope John XXIII by Pope Francis at St. Peter’s Square Sunday morning.

The intersection at Kossuth and Polaski streets was renamed “St. John Paul II Corner.”

For hundreds of members of Bridgeport's Polish community, the location was ideal for the special tribute.

Tomasz Moczerniuk says he began collecting signatures to rename the corner six months ago, and received plenty of support from the roughly 7,000 people of Polish ancestry who live in Bridgeport. Councilwoman Lydia Martinez says she led the effort on the Bridgeport City Council to get the petition approved.
