Bridgeport fire department, OSHA meet to discuss fire violations

Bridgeport firefighters and members of the Occupation Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) met today to learn more about five safety violations cited against the city

BRIDGEPORT - Bridgeport firefighters and members of the Occupation Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) met today to learn more about five safety violations cited against the city after two firefighters died while fighting a fire last summer.

The violations include not performing the required tests on the firefighter's breathing tanks and not conducting medical evaluations for respirator use.

The fire department now has two options; it can either comply with the violations or fight them. Lt. Steven Velasquez and firefighter Mitch Baik both died July 24 while fighting a fire at a home on Elmwood Ave. The department says it has already started to alter its standard operating procedures.
