BRIDGEPORT - An early morning fire destroyed a home in Bridgeport, displacing two families.

Fire officials say seven people were inside the two-story house on Lenox Avenue when flames ignited there at around 6:30 a.m.

Homeowner Eunice Alban says she was alerted to the danger after her first-floor tenant repeatedly banged on her door.

"When I was coming down the stairs it was pretty scary, the smoke," she says. "I couldn't really breathe and I could feel the heat."

Emergency crews spent hours battling the fire. Authorities say for safety purposes, they attacked the flames from the outside.

All the residents were safely evacuated. No injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
