BRIDGEPORT - Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch is asking for donations so the city can buy back guns that may have gotten into the wrong hands.

Finch say that the city has invested $25,000 into the new buyback program.

The program aims to raise $100,000 which would allow the city to pay people who hand in their guns anywhere from $100 to $200 per firearm. Finch hopes that the rest of the funding will come mostly from Bridgeport businesses. Fundraising in the past has come from groups like Aquarion, PSEG, United Illuminating and others, Finch says.

"When the businesses step up, I think that they see this as a way to help their bottom line because we want everyone to do business in Bridgeport and make money here and have jobs here, so we need to quell the gun violence as a major way to do that," the mayor says.

For those who want to turn in a gun to the buyback program, Mayor Finch says that no questions will be asked about how it was acquired, but the gun must be functioning properly.
