BRIDGEPORT - Bridgeport police say a man is facing charges after he allegedly struck a child with his car and then left the scene.

The 10-year-old boy was on his way to school Thursday morning when he was struck crossing the intersection of Howard and Maplewood avenues.

Police say one car stopped to let the boy cross, but a second car hit him. Officials say the driver in that car was 23-year-old Paul Whitehurst, who they say ditched his car and fled on foot.

Investigators say they were able to track down Whitehurst because he was driving a rented car at the time of the accident. They say after speaking with officers, he turned himself in.

The boy suffered cuts and bruises, but is expected to be OK.
