BRIDGEPORT - A Bridgeport man who allegedly tried to rape and kill an elderly Stratford woman went before a judge today.

Police say 24-year-old Jose Enrique Correa choked and restrained the 89-year-old victim as he tried to sexually assault her. They say the incident took place in front of her Canaan Road home last Thursday.

Court records say that Correa got the elderly woman on the ground and at one point was masturbating on top of her. Officers arrested Correa in Bridgeport Tuesday.

Another woman that lives nearby says it was about a month earlier that Correa came to her house offering to work on her yard, and when he spoke to her, she got nervous and slipped.

The woman says Correa grabbed her by the shoulder and kissed her on both cheeks. She says the harrassment continued on the telephone until about the time of the alleged assault on her neighbor.

Court officials say Correa also exposed himself to a bail officer before his arraignment today, which then went on as scheduled.

Police have charged him with attempted murder and assault. Correa's bond is set at $2 million, and he is expected back in court on June 3.
