Police say William "Frank" Godwin, of Park Avenue, was hit at the intersection of Prospect Street and Myrtle Avenue by 42-year-old Venzinia Colon. (2/7/16)

BRIDGEPORT - Bridgeport police say an 87-year-old man died after he was hit by a car early on Saturday morning.

Police say William "Frank" Godwin was hit by a van while trying to cross the intersection of Prospect Street and Myrtle Avenue at around 6:30 a.m.

Police say the female driver called 911 and remained at the scene. They say she is cooperating with investigators.

Officials say a Bridgeport police officer who was on his way to work arrived at the scene before first responders and gave Godwin medical aid.

Godwin was taken to Bridgeport Hospital with serious injuries, where he later died.
