BRIDGEPORT - With Bridgeport schools facing a $15 million budget gap, some parents are concerned about possible cuts to school bus routes.

In the event of cuts at Bridgeport Military Academy, administrators are considering giving students passes for public transportation. Otherwise, some students would face difficulty getting to the school on Iranistan Avenue.

Schools Superintendent Frances Rabinowitz says BMA is unique because it is a magnet school, and its students come from all across the city.

Parents cite safety concerns and longer commute times as reasons to reject public transportation for their children. In some instances, students would have to take two buses and give themselves about an hour to get to school.

No decision on the matter was made Tuesday at a school finance committee meeting. The superintendent says the school board will have the final say on the issue.
