BRIDGEPORT - The Bridgeport Police Department is receiving a $4.8 million grant from the federal government that it will use to increase its force.

The department plans on hiring 20 new officers by the end of the year. Mayor Bill Finch says the incoming money prevents revenue problems from allowing the quality of the force to decline.

So far, 1,500 candidates have signed up to undergo the hiring process.
