BRIDGEPORT - Authorities in Bridgeport are defending their response to what witnesses are describing as a violent police chase over the weekend. Neighbors on the city's east side say police were pursuing a man on a dirt bike at high speeds, even going the wrong direction on a one-way street. The chase ended when the suspect hit a parked patrol car near Stratford Avenue and Fifth Street. Five officers were injured in the crash, but are expected to recover. Once apprehended, suspect Lewis Smalls says he was assaulted by the officers. They insist, however, that he matched the description of an armed thief out of Stratford. Smalls was eventually cleared in the robbery, but still faces charges for fleeing from police. Bridgeport residents decry police behavior during chase
