BRIDGEPORT - Bridgeport police held a gun buyback program Saturday in an effort to get more guns off the streets.

Officials with the Bridgeport Police Department Community Services Division say the guns they reclaim from the streets will be destroyed.

They say efforts such as the buyback program are especially important in the wake of shootings like the recent one at Trumbull Gardens, where nine people were shot.

Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch says his top priority is to reduce violent crime in the city by cutting down on the number of guns in circulation.

Police say they took in more than 100 guns, including five assault weapons, during the buyback.

Those who turned in weapons were not asked questions and received cash.
