BRIDGEPORT - Bridgeport police say they have arrested a suspect who allegedly killed a homeless man and ate parts of his body last month.

Officials say Tyree Smith, 35, bludgeoned to death 43-year-old Angel Gonzalez in Smith's abandoned house near the corner of Brooks and Arctic streets. They say the victim died from repetitive blows to the head with an ax, and that Smith ate parts of his eyeball and brain in a local cemetery.

According to court records, detectives located Smith by recording a cell phone conversation he had with a family member, where he admitted to the crime and said he was living in Lynn Haven, Fla.

Smith is being held on bond pending extradition.

A memorial service for Gonzalez will be held in Bridgeport this Friday at 5 p.m. The victim?s family will not be holding a wake or funeral.
