(07/25/10) BRIDGEPORT - The city of Bridgeport is remembering two fallen firefighters tonight, after they died fighting a house fire yesterday.
Steven Valasquez, 40, was a 16-year veteran and earned the rank of lieutenant this past February. His colleague, Michel Baik, 49, also died in the fire after serving 2 years in the department.
Fire Chief Brian Rooney says Velazquez and Baik were battling the blaze from inside a three story house, checking for victims and putting out hot-spots, when something went wrong. The two men collapsed, for a reason yet-to-be-determined. An intervention team recovered both men from the fire, but was unable to revive either.
At city buildings, the flags fly at half staff, saluting two men that leave behind their family in blue as well as wives and children of their own.
