BRIDGEPORT - A road in Bridgeport was renamed Saturday in honor of the only active-duty Latino military unit in American history.

East Main Street is officially getting an alternate name to pay tribute to the "borinqueneers."

State Representative Christopher Rosario and U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal led the effort to give East Main Street an alternate name in their honor.

Surviving members of the 65th Infantry Regiment from Puerto Rico say that the honor was a proud moment in their lives.

Luis Rodriguez says he and his comrades were a tight-knit group because they depended upon each other to be in a constant state of readiness.

"We had to be ready because this was a real nasty place," Rodriguez says.

The Borinqueneers also have a Congressional Gold Medal, which President Barack Obama signed last year thanks to an effort led by Sen. Blumenthal.
