BRIDGEPORT - Within a few hours, a Bridgeport neighborhood went from having no police stations to having two. However, the city says that only one of them is legal.
Bridgeport Police Chief Joseph Gaudett opened a police substation Wednesday at the troubled Trumbull Gardens housing complex. An hour later, mayoral candidate Joe Ganim opened his own "unofficial" police station just a block away.
"The No. 1 priority of civility is to provide safety to residents; that's not being done," Ganim said. "Unfortunately, we're taking it, to a certain extent, into our own hands, in an unofficial way."

The city attorney claimed Ganim's move is illegal, and the city unveiled its own police station just hours later. Chief Gaudett says that the station has been in the works for several weeks.
