BRIDGEPORT - Bridgeport Superintendent Fran Rabinowitz on Thursday issued a public apology to some high school students who received varsity jackets that were much too big for them.

According to Rabinowitz, students should have been told that when the batch of jackets were offered up this year to students who met a certain criteria, it should have been made clear to them that not everybody who received one was guaranteed to get a size that fit.

Students and their parents say that point was never made clear, but now they plan to organize a fundraiser to generate the money for every student who wants a properly fitted garment.

School officials say the batch they offered was an older version that went back at least six years, when all students who met a certain criteria would get a jacket at no charge. They add that they haven't had the funds to carry on that old tradition for a long time.
