BRIDGEPORT - Bridgeport Superintendent of Schools Paul Vallas has been selected to run for lieutenant governor of Illinois.

Gov. Pat Quinn (D-IL) today selected Vallas as his running mate in next year's gubernatorial election.

Vallas is currently in a court battle to determine if he is eligible to serve as the superintendent in Bridgeport, and supporters were hopeful that the state Supreme Court would rule in his favor. Vallas' opponents say the city is ready for a new superintendent.

Vallas was previously the CEO of the Chicago school system from 1995-2001 and ran for governor in 2002.

Quinn's current lieutenant governor, Sheila Simon, is running for comptroller next year.

No word has been given as to when Vallas will officially step down.
