BRIDGEPORT - The Bridgeport police chief and city leaders announced today a new initiative to reduce violent crimes in the city.
It comes following a recent spike in crime over the summer months. Officials say the city saw six murders in a three-week period in July as well as numerous robberies, assaults and shots fired.
Police Chief Joe Gaudette says the goal is to get all divisions of the police department involved as well as religious and community groups.
Gaudette says they will kick off the new initiative with ?Take Back the Night? walks in violence-prone neighborhoods. The initiative also includes a gun buyback program that will start this week.
