BRIDGEPORT - April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month and one Bridgeport woman is speaking out about the sexual assault incident that changed her life.

"Donna," who wishes to remain anonymous, says her husband raped her in Virginia in 2009, despite her having a restraining order against him. She told News 12 she fled to Connecticut to start her life over.

The U.S. Department of Justice says it has declared April Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month because the number of rape cases is on the rise nationwide.

When Donna escaped to Connecticut, she says she hoped to find a road to safety and freedom.
