NORWALK - Eight students from Brien McMahon High School are recovering after police say the SUV they were in struck another car, flipped over and burst into flames.

The incident occurred at the intersection of Steppingstone Road and Fillow Street at around 9:30 p.m. Saturday night. Police say a white Volvo collided with the Mercedes SUV.

Police say there were two people in the other car involved in the crash.

Authorities say the students were taking part in a school-sponsored scavenger hunt with other students before the accident.

The students were able to escape the SUV with some minor injuries.

Police say the cause of the accident is still under investigation and haven't identified a cause, but they say they are looking into whether speed was a factor.
