BRIDGEPORT - Animal Control officers in Bridgeport say the city’s shelter has an overpopulation of cats.

Facility employees say the shelter can house about 40 cats at one time, but there is currently a lot more than that, including 25 adult cats. Chief Animal Control Officer Gina Gambino says every cat is up for adoption.

“It would be inhumane to house them forever in cages,” Gambnio says. “So what we need is good people to come forward that can provide a good home for cats, as well as rescue groups that can come and help us out as well.”

Gambino adds that the only way to prevent overpopulation is by encouraging people to spay and neuter their pets.
