STAMFORD - Newly released census numbers show that nearly 20 percent of Connecticut's residents claim to come from Italian ancestry.

Officials say that percentage is higher than any other state in the country.

Some residents say they were surprised by the new statistic. They say when they think of Italian-Americans, they think more about New York or New Jersey than Connecticut.

According to the report, the town of East Haven has the highest percentage of Italian-Americans, with about half of the population claiming Italian descent.
