REDDING - A former student-athlete from Redding took the mound Monday in a critical playoff game for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Charlie Morton, who graduated from Joel Barlow High School back in 2002, was named starting pitcher for the Pirates in Game 4 of the National League Division Series against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Mike Santangeli, one of Morton's former teachers and coaches, says he's been following his baseball career since he was drafted out of high school and began playing professionally for the Atlanta Braves.

Santangeli says school staff took a picture of themselves wearing Pirates gear and sent it to the team.
